I bought some “Crispy Taiyaki (Salted & Wasabi Salted)” from the food truck “Shiobara Cafe” that was set up at the plaza in front of the west exit of Nasushiobara Station.
The plaza in front of Nasushiobara Station’s west exit is currently part of a social experiment running until the end of November 2025, exploring how the public space right outside the station can be used as a comfortable everyday hangout.
While I was waiting to transfer from the Shinkansen to a local train, I stepped out to the plaza and spotted a food truck called “Shiobara Cafe,” so I decided to check it out.

Review of my actual experience visiting
Even though I knew it was cold out, I wanted some fresh air, so I stepped out from the west exit and found a food truck called “Shiobara Cafe” parked there.

Ordered Menu and Price
Oden sounded great in this weather, but “Crispy Taiyaki” caught my eye even more.
The owner told me, “The most popular flavor is the salt one, and if you’re up for it, try the wasabi—it’s fun.”
So I grabbed both.
- Crispy Taiyaki salt (¥200)
- Crispy Taiyaki wasabi (¥200)
Salt flavor
It’s a taiyaki filled with chunky sweet red-bean paste, deep-fried until crisp and finished with a sprinkle of salt.
Just like the name “Crispy” suggests, the outside is super crunchy and crackly.
The salty-sweet combo works perfectly—I finished one in no time.

Wasabi flavor
This one was also deep-fried taiyaki with chunky red-bean filling, but topped with wasabi salt.
It was a totally new combo for me, but the sharp wasabi kick and the sweetness of the beans went surprisingly well together.
It had a nice contrast, and it actually left a super clean aftertaste.

The atmosphere and service of food trucks
As I browsed the selection, the shop owner kindly explained each item.
When I mentioned I’d stopped by while waiting for the train, he even asked how long I could wait—which was really thoughtful.
He kept up a friendly conversation while preparing my order, so waiting outside in the cold wasn’t a bother at all.
