“Ikezushi,” a sushi restaurant located about a 5-minute walk from the west exit of Kuroiso Station.

This is an Edomae sushi restaurant that uses fresh ingredients delivered directly from the source.

The lunch menu is popular for its great value, but this time I visited for dinner and enjoyed the premium nigiri, natto roll, and hamo tempura.

*Edomae sushi is a traditional Tokyo-style sushi that originally used fresh seafood caught in Tokyo Bay. Back in the day, people preserved the fish with techniques like marinating, simmering, or curing with vinegar and salt, so the sushi has a lot of flavor and character. Today, even if the fish doesn’t come from Tokyo Bay anymore, “Edomae” still refers to this classic style—simple, flavorful, and all about bringing out the best taste of each topping.

Review of my actual experience visiting

Under the cold sky, the orange light inside the restaurant looked very warm.

Here’s what I ordered and the prices

  • Premium nigiri (2,640 JPY)
  • Natto roll (880 JPY)
  • Hamo tempura (660 JPY)

Premium nigiri

I got a set with 7 pieces of nigiri, 1 gunkan, and 1 sushi roll.

The lineup was descibed here.

  • White fish
  • Medium-fatty tuna
  • Squid
  • Scallop
  • Surf clam
  • Sweet shrimp
  • Herring roe
  • Salmon roe
  • Fatty tuna roll

I wasn’t sure what order to eat them in, but I started with the white fish and squid, then moved on to the scallop, surf clam, sweet shrimp, and herring roe.

I saved the rich ones for the end—salmon roe, medium-fatty tuna, and the toro roll.

Everything was delicious, and I was super satisfied!

Natto roll

I was feeling a little peckish, so I ordered a natto roll and the hamo tempura mentioned later.

The tangy vinegar rice and savory natto are the perfect match!

Hamo tempura

Hamo (also called “pike conger”) is a long, eel-like fish that’s super popular in Kyoto, especially in summer.

It has a clean, delicate flavor and a really light texture.

The hamo tempura I had was amazing—the fluffy, tender meat practically melted in my mouth.

It’s mild, but still packed with a nice, savory depth.

I really loved it!

The atmosphere inside

Upon entering the restaurant, you’ll find a long counter seating area on the left and a raised tatami seating area on the right.

Since I was alone, I sat at the counter seat.

When the proprietress asked, “Would tea be alright?” I replied, “Yes,” and green tea and complimentary miso soup were brought out.

The owner and proprietress were really friendly and easy to talk to.

When I wanted to add a natto roll, the owner even asked, “A full order is three pieces — is that okay? I can make fewer if you want.”

I thought that was really thoughtful.

They also offered me a refill of miso soup, which made me super happy!
